The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to make innovative efforts to reduce the number of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DBD) cases in its region. One of the strategies that is now being expanded is the technique of disseminating Wolbachia mosquitoes. This program has been implemented in various areas in Jakarta, including West Jakarta and is now reaching the South Kembangan zona.

According to a report from CNN Indonesia, the dissemination of Wolbachia mosquitoes aims to reduce the population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are the main cause of the spread of the dengue virus. Wolbachia is a natural bacterium that can inhibit the replication of the dengue virus inside the mosquito’s body, so when the mosquito breeds, its offspring are no longer able to transmit the disease to humans.

Health experts also support this step as an effective strategy for controlling DBD. “The dissemination of Wolbachia mosquitoes is one method that has been proven to reduce DBD case numbers in various countries,” said one expert from IPB University, as quoted by Tempo.co.

Increase in DBD Cases Encourages Quick Action by the DKI Provincial Government

The DKI Jakarta Health Office noted that as of March 2025, there were 1,416 DBD cases in the capital city, with the highest case numbers in West Jakarta. This data shows a significant increase compared to the previous year, prompting the DKI Government to take further preventive actions immediately.

With the dissemination of Wolbachia mosquitoes as the main strategy, it is hoped that the transmission rates of DBD can be significantly reduced. In addition, this step is also supported by environmental cleanliness movements through the 3M Plus program, namely Emptying, Closing, Recycling, as well as additional efforts like using larvicides and maintaining environmental cleanliness.

According to a report from Kompas.com, the South Kembangan area has now become a new target for the dissemination of Wolbachia mosquitoes. This is due to the zona having a relatively high rate of DBD cases in recent months. “We hope the community can understand and support this program for the common good,” said a representative from the DKI Jakarta Health Office.

In addition to the efforts made by the government, community participation is also a key factor in controlling the spread of DBD.
